Application
Several locations around the
City have been selected for public sculpture. Charlottesville is visited
by 500,000 tourists each year. All locations are in areas of high vehicular
traffic. Although we are looking primarily for large works, we have
established sites along Schenk's Branch Greenway where a pedestrian
path parallels McIntire Road and allows for views of smaller works.
Each installation will be in place for 11 months.
Each selected work is provided with signs that direct the viewer to this Web site. Based on electronic material submitted, each artist receives appropriate descriptions of themselves and their work, the availability of other work for sale, and a link to his/her own Web site. Artists are responsible for providing this description and images of work in electronic format. Every effort will be made to publicize the work with the local media.
Entry Requirements
The invitation is open to artists working independently or in a collaborative
group. Interested scupltors are encouraged to submit:
1) A professional resume with examples of other monumental work
2) All contact information including phone, email, address and Web address
3) Photos or a CD of images of available work. Only baseline jpg files with 72 dpi and an overall dimension of 1920x1920
4) Footing requirements and method of installation for each work
5) Short artist statement about each work
Photos and CD images must
be clearly labeled with ARTIST'S NAME, TITLE OF WORK, MEDIUM and DIMENSIONS.
Additional materials, such as brochures and artist's statements are
encouraged. If the sculptor provides a self-addressed, stamped envelope,
submitted materials will be returned.
Each artist selected will receive a $1,500 honorarium.
Selection Process
After juried review of the submitted materials, six to ten artists will be invited to participate. Contracts will be executed with the artists and arrangements made for the delivery and installation of the works. All artists are required to carry general liability insurance and, if they deem it necessary, property insurance. Artwork will be in place from October to September of the following year.
Schedule
Deadline for entries: July 1, 2011
Finalists notified: August 15, 2011
Sculpture installed: Month of October 2011
Sculpture removed: September 2012
Location
At the discretion of the jury and pending final approval by the City, ten locations will be selected from a list of 20 potential sites. The jury will strive to provide the most suitable location available for the selected sculptures. After the sites have been assigned, the artist may coordinate with the Construction Chair on the exact placement of the artwork within the site.
