Statement
The sculpture "Paring"
reflects, as it should, many of my personal preferences in art.
To begin, I prefer steel, both mild and stainless, above all other
materials. As a sculptor, I build large pieces using the additive
method of construction, welding piece by piece unto completion.
An aspect of design that
intrigues me is using precarious balance in my work. Welding enables
me to freeze pieces in place. These pieces may appear to be falling,
or balanced momentarily on a point or an edge, but are, in fact,
very securely welded -creating an illusion I could not achieve using
casting or carving methods.
"Paring" involves
an illusion of a stainless steel wedge cutting or shearing a round
form into several pieces. The pieces are in the process of falling,
capturing a moment in time. One section has landed on the base and
is frozen, standing on its point, diverting attention from the top
of the piece to the very bottom.
