Artist Statement

On display courtesy of : Miller Off Main Street Galleries, Blacksburg, Virginia.

I make art out of my feelings, experiences and imagination. This, I am convinced, is the only way beauty and truth can be approached. I am helpless to know what others will find to be beautiful or meaningful. I only know that when I have been able to glimpse beauty and truth through the work of other artists (in any of the Arts) it is because they have been honest, genuine, and real. So, I try to live my life well and through that living, when occasional transcendent moments occur, I try to hold onto them long enough to make something from them that will contain some of their essence.

Occasionally, when working around the house and I am hurrying before sunset, the words to a particular song from my past come to mind. Once when this happened I realized that I was experiencing the metaphor-the night was coming but, so was THE NIGHT! I held onto the thought, or it held onto me, and it became this sculpture.

The title is from the hymn," Work For the Night is Coming" by Annie Coghill(1864).

Work for the night is coming
Work through the morning hours
Work while the dew is sparkling
Work mid springing flowers
Work when the day grows brighter
Work in the glowing sun
Work for the night is coming
When man's work is done.

Work for the night is coming
Work through the sunny noon
Fill the brightest hours with labor
Rest comes sure and soon.
Give every flying minute
Something to keep in store
Work for the night is coming
When man works no more.

Work for the night is coming
Under the sunset skies
While their bright tints are glowing
Work for the daylight flies.
Work till the last beam fadeth
Fadeth to shine no more
Work while the night is darkening
When man's work is o'er.
