Statement
My sculptural production
falls into two technical categories: granite carving and bronze-like
"maintainables" which have the look of bronze but at a
fraction of the cost. Both these mediums are the result of my interest
in outdoor sculpture and gardening - landscaping.
Granite carving dominates my current production as its permanence
and dynamic presence are very alluring. Though granite has been
around a long time, its use by sculptors has been restricted due
to its perceived degree of technical difficulty. Though challenging,
the stone possesses opportunities that limestone and marble do not,
and, except for ancient pieces from Egypt and a handful of other
places, granite is usually forced to behave much like its softer
cousins; to look like marble. Rarely, is its natural breadth of
texture explored taking advantage of its propensity towards mass
and so, a very powerful voice.
Sculpture's very physicality
presents a tension against gravity and space with its bulk and mass.
The resulting complex in combination with gravitational orientation
parallels our own physical relation to our world and creates energy
spiritually resonant of life that we perceive through our feelings.
Concurrent to sculptural activities, I am deeply involved with gardening
and landscaping - the broader aspect of sculpture where architectural
space colludes and combines with living form. How does a sculpture
relate to us in its placement? The environment of any space, a garden,
a walkway, esplanade may be completely transformed by the physicality
of a tree, a wall, a texture, a sculpture. Exhibitions such as ArtInPlace
offer an experimental ground in which our world may be adjusted
physically and emotionally by the considered addition of form.
