Transformer
Aaron Fein
Wood and plastic 8' x 12'
250 ByPass

"I am a sculptor whose work has been vastly enriched by my training as an architect. Awed and inspired by simple industrial scaffolding, I probe the physicality of common materials and objects to find unique sculptural forms and new visual meanings. Always tempered with a sense of wit and humor, my sculpture seeks to challenge perceptions of materiality and space.

This work, entitled, Transformer is the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid. Wooden dowels and plastic tubing are used to create over 2000 squares that interlock with one another around an armature of steel rods to create a flexible mesh-like surface. Sited on the median of a busy roadway, as one approaches the work, its form appears to be funnel-shaped, opening towards the sky. Yet as one passes the piece, its shape appears to turn in space revealing the depth and complexity of its geometry."
