Artist Statement

This sculpture Metamorphosis symbolizes life cycle, change, release and rebirth. The butterfly is a symbol of these life changes, and is a theme in my art. I have done butterfly counts for several years with naturalist organizations to monitor species' numbers, and have done a pollination series of the rare ghost orchid in Florida. I taught art at the college level for years, and am focusing on sundials and large sculptures now. Metal is my preferred medium, and art photography is my second focus. I have photos of many rare species of butterflies and moths worldwide.

My partner in this sculpture, Robert Benfield, is versed in metallurgy, and is also a naturalist/geologist. We have co-partnered on many projects that involve recycled materials welded together, and are currently welding a 21' large outdoor metal sculpture.
