Statement I see the work that I do as a physical dialog between materials, imagery and processes. Different materials provide different constraints and opportunities, and I see my job as an artist being to discover and exploit these different potentials through various processes of material manipulation. The idea that you start with is ultimately only as articulate as the object itself is, speaking through its own language of form, scale and surface. The subject matter that I have been working with a lot recently deals with images of motion, constraint, security and imbalance, and hopefully the work communicates something of these concerns. If the object is doing its job (and if I am doing mine) the image will last beyond the point that the piece itself is gone. Jim Respess |
