Convergence is pretty typical of the kind of sculptures that I like to make. It develolped as a resulty of my attempts to create a compound curve in sheet steel without the use of large-scale forming equipment. I have always been interested in low tech ways to create large-scale sculpture. Designing a form that uses straight edges and flat planes is simple enough, but curves are another issue. As I experimented with various ways to create a form that curves in two planes, I discovered a method that resulted in an interestins shape with a very simple manipulation.
Convergence is made up of many pieces that are fromed using this technique. Basically, I cut a section out of each sheet of steel and then bring the "legs" of the resulting shape together which causes the sheet of steel to assume a curved form. I found this form to be similar to many shapes that can be found in the natural world. The steel always takes the same form. It's physics at work. Math and geometry are expressed as the result of a process, not as a preconceived end result of a formula or equation! I like to think of sculpture as the creation of the poetry of form in material. Ultimately, that is what I am trying to create: The poetry of Form in Material.
