Artist Statement

"Valence" is a dynamic form that resembles the movement of ephemeral objects that surround us, or that we are made up of. The form suggests atoms as they swirl around one another, collide, and bond to create larger forms. Another possible interpretation is that the form represents celestial bodies and their movements, planets, stars, and comets dancing their way through the galaxy. In either case, the negative space inherent in the materials augments the feeling of levity, translucence, and movement, despite the volume they occupy.

I see my artwork as a type of personal evolution, an ever changing dialog between myself and the world around me. I try to examine this world and find the overlooked elements of form that no one else sees and manifest those hidden portions of our environment in my work. Often these forms involve abstracted versions of objects such as fossils, bones, microscopic organisms, the core of the earth, or segments of form suggested in the texture of something, such as the bark of a tree, or the furrows in a piece of coral. These things and the forms they inspire are segments of a whole entity which are taken out of context. They stand on their own as complete forms, but suggest integral relationships to other objects which are not present.
